Bear-Trax FAMILY ADVENTURE JOURNAL

31-Page Printable PDF Digital Download

Give a child more than an outdoor activity—give them knowledge, confidence and memories they may carry for the rest of their life.

The Bear‑Trax Family Adventure Journal was created for children, parents, grandparents and families who want to explore the outdoors, learn useful skills and spend meaningful time together.

This is not merely a book of worksheets to complete indoors. It is a guide for going outside, observing what is real, asking questions, practicing old skills and recording the story of the adventure.

Twenty hands-on field missions encourage families to explore nature, history, outdoor skills and family heritage together.

Includes the original Bear-Trax reflection, “Where Does Man Belong?”

THE 20 FIELD MISSIONS

  1. Read a trail of animal tracks
  2. Identify five trees
  3. Build and completely extinguish a safe campfire
  4. Practice three useful knots
  5. Choose a safe campsite
  6. Find north without relying on a phone
  7. Keep a weather watch
  8. Cook a simple outdoor meal
  9. Sit quietly and identify ten sounds
  10. Study one square yard of nature
  11. Follow a creek or watershed on a map
  12. Look for evidence of the four seasons
  13. Learn a forgotten family skill
  14. Interview a grandparent or elder
  15. Visit and study a historic place
  16. Observe and sketch a tool from the past
  17. Practice Leave No Trace principles
  18. Quietly watch a sunrise or sunset
  19. Tell and record a campfire story
  20. Write what the outdoors taught the family

WILDLIFE TRACK FIELD GUIDE

The journal includes illustrated reference pages for identifying tracks left by:

• White-tailed deer

• Black bear

• Raccoon

• Coyote

• Bobcat

• Red or gray fox

• Eastern cottontail rabbit

• Gray squirrel

• Virginia opossum

• Wild turkey

Young explorers learn to consider track shape, toe count, claw marks, approximate size, habitat and walking pattern rather than trying to identify an animal from a single unclear print.

The journal also contains a Track Detective activity and a Track Comparison Lab where children can measure, sketch and compare actual tracks found outdoors.

MORE THAN A NATURE JOURNAL

The Bear‑Trax Family Adventure Journal brings together several important parts of the Bear‑Trax vision:

• Passing useful knowledge to the next generation

• Encouraging curiosity and careful observation

• Preserving family stories and forgotten skills

• Building confidence through practical experience

• Teaching respect for wildlife and the land

• Helping parents and grandparents spend meaningful time with children

• Finding peace, gratitude and wonder in God’s creation

The finished journal becomes a family keepsake filled with observations, sketches, discoveries, stories and memories.
